Door Refinishing in Bowie, MD
In 1957 Levitt and Sons bought the 2,280-acre Belair estate and built Belair at Bowie on it. Over 1,500 families had bought or reserved lots after the first year of sales, and more than 2,000 houses were occupied by 1963. That build still defines the city: of Bowie's 22,070 housing units, 7,168 date from the 1960s — the largest single decade — and 15,982 are detached houses. Median home value is $459,300 and median household income $141,995.
Those Levitt doors, and the ones that replaced them, are what we refinish. On site, on the hinges, most single entries done inside a day, with a one-year written warranty. Call (202) 979-9977.
Levitt Doors: Belair at Bowie's Cape Cods, Colonials and Ranchers
Levitt sold five models at Belair: the "Country Clubber," three- and four-bedroom "Colonials," the "Rancher" and the "Cape Cod," with the cheapest four-bedroom Cape Cod starting at $15,990. Sixty-odd years on, few of those entries still carry their original slab, but the openings are unchanged — modest single doors, often with a small light or a plain six-panel face, set under a shallow stoop cover. What sits in them now is a mix: replacement fir and pine doors from the 1980s and 1990s, stain-grade hardwood upgrades, and a lot of wood-grain fiberglass. The failure pattern is the same across all of them, because the exposure is the same.
Why South-Facing Bowie Doors Take More Winter Sun Than Summer Sun
Here is the fact that surprises Bowie homeowners: a south-facing door takes more direct sun from November to February than it does in June and July. NASA POWER data for 2001–2020 shows it clearly. In summer the sun is high and a stoop overhang shades the slab; in winter the low sun drives straight in under the cover and onto the door face all day. Because Levitt laid out whole sections at once, entire streets share an orientation, which is why one side of a Bowie street can look fine while the doors opposite are gray and flaking. Around 83 freeze-thaw days a year, derived from NOAA daily records for 1991–2020, finish the job.
Historic Area Work Permits Near Belair Mansion and Old Town Bowie
Bowie's historic anchor is the Belair Mansion, a circa-1745 five-part Georgian plantation house built for the colonial governors Samuel and Benjamin Ogle, along with the old railroad settlement at Old Town — chartered as Huntington City, rechartered as Bowie in 1880. Where a property is a county historic site or sits within a historic district, Prince George's County generally requires a Historic Area Work Permit for exterior alterations. The county's own guidance notes that repair or replacement of external doors with like materials of like design may qualify as ordinary maintenance instead. Refinishing is the least intrusive option there is, but confirm with the Historic Preservation Commission for your address before booking.
Bowie Neighborhoods and Levitt Sections We Serve
Levitt organized Belair into alliterative lettered sections, and Bowie natives still use them: Somerset for the S streets, then Buckingham, Kenilworth, Foxhill and Tulip Grove — the B, K, F and T sections — followed by Yorktown. We cover all of them, plus Pointer Ridge, Heather Hills, Rockledge, Whitehall, Northview, Old Town Bowie, Fairwood, Saddlebrook, Collington Station and Woodmore. Bowie is heavily owner-occupied, with 18,085 owner households out of 21,551 occupied units, which is why we get so much whole-street work here. One neighbor books, and the doors either side turn out to be the same age on the same exposure.
One-Day On-Site Door Refinishing in Bowie
We set up on the stoop, mask the opening, and strip and sand the slab where it hangs. The house stays locked and heated or cooled all day — no plywood panel, no open frame. Then stain and clear coats go on in place. A standard Belair single entry is comfortably a one-day job; doubles, French pairs and doors with rot in the bottom rail take longer. Bowie pricing runs $550 to $1,400 for a single entry door, $950 to $2,200 for a double or French pair, and $1,200 to $3,200 for a wood garage door. One-year written warranty on every job. Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the original 1960s Levitt doors worth saving?
If you still have one and it closes square, usually yes. Those slabs are solid and the timber in them is generally better than what goes into a mid-range door today. What kills them is rot in the bottom rail after decades of splashback, or delamination if it is a hollow-core slab that was never meant for exterior use. We check the bottom rail, the joints and the hinge stiles first and give you a straight answer.
Can you do a double or French door pair in one day?
Sometimes, but we quote doubles as one to two days and plan for two. There is twice the slab area, twice the edge work, and on French pairs a great deal of hand cutting-in around every muntin and glazing bead. Rushing that is how you get runs and thin spots at the glass line. The doors stay in place and closeable at the end of each day either way, so you are never left open.
Do you refinish the storm door too?
Wood storm and screen doors, yes — they are usually thinner, lighter and in worse condition than the entry door, because nobody maintains them. Aluminum and vinyl storm doors are outside what we do. If a storm door is in the way of working the main slab we will take it off and rehang it at the end at no extra charge. Tell us about it when you call so we allow the time.
Is my house secure and heated while you work?
Yes, and that is the core of the on-site method. The door is never removed and never off its hinges, so the opening is never empty. It closes and locks at the end of every working day, and whenever you need it shut during the day. Your heating or air conditioning keeps running, pets stay inside, and there is no plywood panel screwed over your entry for a week.
