Fiberglass Door Refinishing and Staining
A faded fiberglass door is the job homeowners are told cannot be done. Door companies say it, big-box stores say it, and it is wrong. The color on a stained fiberglass door is a thin factory finish sitting on a molded skin, and when that finish burns off you are left with a chalky, washed-out, orange-brown door that looks worse than a tired wood one. The skin underneath is almost always perfect.
We strip the failed factory finish, re-grain the surface so the molded wood texture reads as real again, re-stain it in your color, and seal it with UV-stable clear coats. It happens at your house, usually in a day, and it costs a fraction of the $3,500 to $8,000 that a replacement fiberglass entry runs installed in this market.
What fiberglass door refinishing involves
The process looks similar to wood from the outside and is different in every detail. We clean and de-chalk the surface, remove the failed factory topcoat and any weathered stain, scuff the skin so new material has something to hold, then rebuild the color in layers. Fiberglass has no grain of its own, only a molded texture, so color has to be worked into that texture by hand with brushes and graining tools rather than wiped on flat. Then the clear coats go on. Hardware, weatherstrip and glass surrounds come off or get masked, the frame and sidelights are quoted alongside, and the door is back in service the same day.
Can you stain a fiberglass door darker
Darker is straightforward. Lighter is not. Because the color sits on the surface rather than soaking into the material, we can build a mahogany, walnut or espresso tone over almost any faded fiberglass door, including one that has gone orange. Going significantly lighter than the existing color means removing more of what is there, and on some factory finishes that is a longer job we will price accordingly. Solid paint is also an option on fiberglass and is the most durable finish available for it, following the Forest Service ranking that pigment carries the UV load. Gel stain vs regular stain on fiberglass
Regular penetrating stain is designed to soak into open wood cells. Fiberglass has none, so a penetrating stain simply sits there, stays soft, and wipes off. Gel stain is the right tool because it is thick enough to stay where it is put and can be dragged through the molded grain to build depth, highlight and shadow the way real wood has. That is also why a good fiberglass job is a hand-graining job rather than a wiping job, and why two coats of gel color under multiple clear coats look nothing like a single flat pass. The clear coats are what stop the color burning off again.
Why fiberglass doors fade and go chalky
The mechanism is UV degradation of the coating, not failure of the fiberglass. The factory finish on most stained fiberglass entry doors is thin by design, and it is fighting the same load a wood door fights: about 118 separate rain events a year at Dulles (NOAA NCEI) and a south-facing surface that, per NASA POWER data for 2001-2020, takes more direct sun in November through February than in June or July because the low winter sun hits the face nearly square on. The clear breaks down first, the pigment underneath oxidizes and dulls, and the surface goes chalky to the touch. Wipe your door with a damp white cloth. If the cloth comes away brown, the finish is spent.
Fiberglass door refinishing cost
A single fiberglass entry door falls in the same $550 to $1,400 band as a wood door, and a double or French pair runs $950 to $2,200. Fiberglass usually needs less repair work than an old wood door but more hand time in the graining, so the two end up close. Sidelights and transoms, which fiberglass entries very often have, are quoted separately, as is the frame. Compare that against a replacement: a comparable fiberglass entry unit installed in the DC metro typically runs $3,500 to $8,000 or more once trim, paint and labor are counted, and the new one arrives with the same class of factory finish that failed the first time.
How long does a refinished fiberglass door last
Longer than the factory finish it replaces, because we put more material on it than a production line can afford to. What we build is a heavier film of UV-stable clear over hand-worked color, and the same exposure rules apply as for wood: the Forest Service Wood Handbook notes that a north-facing elevation holds a finish about twice as long as a south-facing one. A shaded or covered fiberglass door can go several years untouched. A fully exposed south or west door benefits from a light clear recoat on a maintenance schedule, which is a short, inexpensive visit and prevents ever having to strip it back to the skin again.

How do I know if my door is fiberglass or wood?
Tap it with a knuckle near the middle of a panel. Fiberglass sounds hollow and slightly hard; wood sounds dense and dull. Look at the top edge of the door where it is usually unfinished: wood shows end grain and often a lamination line, fiberglass shows a smooth composite edge and a visible seam where the skin meets the frame. Also look for identical grain patterns repeating between panels, which only happens on a molded door. Send us a photo of the top edge and we will tell you.
Can you fix a crack or hole in a fiberglass door?
Small cracks, chips and hardware holes are repairable. We fill with the appropriate composite filler, re-shape the molded texture across the repair, and blend the color through it so the patch disappears under the finish. What we cannot fix is a skin that has delaminated from the frame over a large area, or a door that has been struck hard enough to distort. Why does my fiberglass door look white and chalky?
That chalk is the broken-down remains of the factory clear coat. Ultraviolet light degrades the binder in the coating, leaving loose pigment and filler on the surface, which is why a damp cloth comes away brown. Washing it makes the door look better for a week and does nothing for the cause, because there is no protective film left. Once a door is chalking, the finish is at the end of its life and the color underneath is exposed. Refinishing at that stage is straightforward; leaving it longer is not.
Can a fiberglass door with glass inserts be refinished?
Yes, and most of them have glass. The decorative glass panel is held by a molded frame or a fitted trim ring, which we mask carefully or remove where it is designed to come out. The stain and clear coats stop cleanly at the glass line. Leaded, beveled and caming glass all handle this fine because nothing abrasive goes near them. We also clean the glass and reseal the surround if it has opened up, since that gap is a common water path into the door skin.
How long does fiberglass door refinishing take?
A single fiberglass entry door is usually a one-day job at your home. A double door, or a single door with two sidelights and a transom, generally runs one to two days because the graining is hand work and there is more of it.
