Iron and Wrought Iron Door Restoration
Iron entry doors fail from the metal outward. Water finds a scratch, a weld seam or the bottom of a stile, oxidation starts underneath the coating, and the rust pushes the finish off from below. By the time you see orange streaks running down the face, the problem has been working for a while. Painting over it traps the moisture and buys a season at most.
Our iron work starts by taking the corrosion back to sound metal, treating what remains, and then rebuilding a coating system that is bonded to clean steel rather than floating on rust. We do it on site, we work around the glass and scrollwork rather than dismantling your entry, and the door carries the same one-year written warranty as everything else we finish.
What wrought iron door restoration covers
The scope is the whole unit: the door leaves, the frame, the operable glass panels and the scrollwork over them, the threshold and the hardware. We assess where corrosion has actually reached, mechanically remove scale and loose material, treat the remaining surface, then apply a bonding primer and a direct-to-metal finish coat in your color, followed by a protective clear where the design calls for it. Glass is cleaned and the seals around it checked, because a failed glass seal is one of the most common water paths into an iron door. Weatherstripping and sweeps that have hardened or torn get replaced at the same time.
How to remove rust from an iron entry door
There is no chemical that makes rust disappear. It has to be taken off mechanically, back to sound metal, and then the exposed steel has to be protected before the air gets at it again. That means abrasive work by hand and with power tools, carefully, with the glass and the surrounding masonry masked. Where pitting has gone deep but the section is still sound, a rust-converting treatment stabilizes what cannot be reached. What we will not do is scuff the surface and paint over it, which is why so many iron doors are on their third failed repaint. If a section has corroded through, we will tell you and price the metal repair separately.
Why iron doors rust in the mid-Atlantic
Corrosion needs oxygen, water and time, and the local climate is generous with the water. Dulles averages roughly 118 separate rain events a year (NOAA NCEI), and morning relative humidity sits at or above 80 percent for six straight months from May through October, peaking near 87 percent in September. That is a daily wet and dry cycle on the metal all summer. Then winter brings about 90 freeze-thaw cycles a year, derived from NOAA daily records for 1991-2020, which works any water sitting in a seam or a joint. Add road salt tracked onto the threshold and the bottom rail becomes the first casualty on nearly every iron door we see.
Iron door refinishing colors and clear coat options
Most iron entry doors in this region are a bronze, oil-rubbed black or dark graphite, often with a highlighted or rubbed edge on the scrollwork that gives the metal depth. We can hold your existing look, deepen it, or change it entirely. Because pigmented coatings carry UV load far better than clear ones, a solid direct-to-metal color is the durable choice on iron, and the highlight work is done within that system rather than on top of bare metal. A protective clear goes over the whole assembly where the design or the exposure warrants it. Hardware can be polished, repainted or left as it is.
Iron door restoration cost
Iron doors are priced by the job rather than off a standard band, because condition drives the hours far more than size does. A single iron door in fair shape with surface rust sits at the upper end of our $550 to $1,400 single-door range. A double iron entry with sidelights, transom and significant corrosion behaves like our $950 to $2,200 double-door work or above. Metal repair, glass reseal, weatherstrip and threshold work are separate lines. Compare that with a replacement iron entry, which is a heavy custom unit with a long lead time and an installed cost well above the $3,500 to $8,000 typical of a wood or fiberglass entry.
How long does an iron door finish last
Longer than a clear finish on wood, because the coating is pigmented and the substrate does not move with moisture the way wood does. Exposure still rules. The National Park Service, in Preservation Brief 47, notes that materials and finishes on southern and western exposures weather faster than those on northern or eastern ones, and that exterior doors merit inspection every six months. On iron that inspection is quick and worth doing: look at the bottom rail, the weld seams and the glass surrounds for any orange bloom. Caught at a spot, it is a touch-up. Left a year, it is another strip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can rust on an iron door be stopped permanently?
It can be stopped for a long time, and honesty matters more than a sales answer here. Steel will corrode again wherever water reaches bare metal, so the durability of the job comes down to how completely the corrosion was removed, how well the primer bonded, and whether the water paths were closed. That is why we deal with the glass seals, the threshold and the weatherstripping as part of the work rather than just coating the face. Kept sealed and inspected, a properly restored iron door goes many years between services.
Do you have to remove the glass from an iron door?
Usually not. Most iron entry doors have operable glass panels behind the scrollwork that swing open for cleaning, which gives us access to both sides of the metal without removing anything. Where glass is fixed, we mask it and work up to the edge. If a seal has failed and water is getting behind the glass, we will reseal it, and we will tell you before we start if we think a panel genuinely needs to come out. Nothing abrasive is ever run against the glass.
Can you change the color of a wrought iron door?
Yes. Iron takes a color change more easily than wood does, because the finish is pigmented and opaque rather than a stain read through grain. Going from a dated bronze to a flat black, or from black to a warmer oil-rubbed tone with highlighted scrollwork, is routine. Bring the color you want, or we will bring samples and put them on the door where you can see them against your brick or stone in daylight. The one thing we will steer you away from is a light color on a fully exposed south-facing iron door.
Will my iron door rust again after refinishing?
Not for years, if the preparation was right and the entry stays sealed. The failures we get called to fix are almost always doors that were scuffed and painted over active rust, which hides the problem for a season while it keeps growing underneath. Our work goes back to sound metal first. After that, the two things that shorten an iron finish are a leaking glass seal and standing water at the threshold, both of which we address as part of the job and both of which are worth a look every spring.
Do you restore iron gates, railings and light fixtures too?
Yes. Railings, handrails, gates, window grilles and exterior light fixtures use the same coating systems and the same preparation as an iron door, and it is common for a house to need all of them at once because they were all installed and coated on the same day.
