Door Refinishing in Vienna, VA

Vienna is a 1960s town with a Victorian hill in the middle of it. Forty-nine percent of the town's housing was built before 1970 and the 1960s is the single biggest decade. Vienna Woods alone runs to roughly 1,400 single-family houses, most of them put up between 1950 and 1965, and most still carrying their original entry doors.

Above that sits Windover Heights, known locally as The Hill: about 47 historic properties running from bungalow cottages to stately Victorians, made a historic district by the Town on April 2, 1979. Another quarter of Vienna's housing has gone up since 2000 on tear-down lots, with eight-foot stained doors. We refinish all three kinds on site. Call (202) 979-9977.

Front Door Refinishing in Vienna, VA

Of Vienna's 5,818 housing units, 4,556 are detached single-family homes, and the median home value is $1,008,800. On the street that means a lot of 1950s and 60s ramblers, split-levels and center-hall Colonials through Vienna Woods, Cedar Lane and Westbriar Country Club Manor, most with a standard 6'8" door, often solid, often painted, often with three small lights across the top. Then there are the new builds dropped onto the same streets, carrying eight-foot stained mahogany. The old doors are usually the better wood; the new ones are usually the worse finish. Both come back well, and both are refinished at your house rather than hauled off to a shop.

Windover Heights Historic District: Refinish, Don't Replace

The Windover Heights Historic District was established on April 2, 1979 and covers roughly 47 historic properties on The Hill, everything from small bungalow cottages to full Victorians. Exterior alterations there go before the Windover Heights Board of Review, and the neighborhood has run its Walk on the Hill every year since 1974. That review process is exactly why refinishing beats replacing on a Vienna historic property: you keep the original door, the original panel profile, the original hardware and the original opening, so nothing about the elevation changes. Confirm your own project with the Town of Vienna before work starts. We will put the scope and materials in writing for the Board if you need it.

Why Vienna Front Doors Stick, Swell and Peel

This one is about moisture more than sun. USDA figures for the DC area put the equilibrium moisture content of outdoor wood at 11.1 percent in April and 12.6 percent in September, and those are monthly averages with far larger daily swings on top. At Dulles, morning relative humidity sits at or above 80 percent for six straight months from May through October, peaking at 87 percent in September, then drops to around 53 percent by afternoon. The door swells every morning and shrinks every afternoon, all summer long. That is what opens the joints between stiles and rails, cracks the finish along those lines, and makes a door that latched fine in February bind in August.

Vienna Neighborhoods We Serve

Vienna Woods, Windover Heights, Westbriar Country Club Manor, Cedar Lane, Dunn Loring Woods, Wolf Trap Woods, McHenry Heights, Moorefield and the Hunter Mill corridor are all inside our normal run, along with the Wolf Trap community off Trap Road, which uses Vienna 22182 addresses and ranks among the wealthiest places in the country by average household income. The doors there run correspondingly large. We also cover the older blocks around Church Street and Maple Avenue in the town center, where street parking is tight and working on site rather than carting a door away is the difference between a one-day job and a fortnight of inconvenience.

On-Site, One-Day Door Refinishing in Vienna

Your door stays on its hinges from start to finish. We mask off the frame, glass and hardware, strip the failed coating, sand back to bare sound wood, treat any opened joints, then stain and build multiple coats of exterior-grade finish. Most single Vienna doors are finished in a day; doubles can go into a second. If the door has been sticking, we seal the top and bottom edges as well. Most doors were never sealed there, and that bare end grain is exactly where the summer moisture gets in. Single doors $550 to $1,400, doubles and French pairs $950 to $2,200, wood garage doors $1,200 to $3,200, one-year written warranty.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

My front door sticks in July but closes fine in January. Will refinishing fix it?

Usually a large part of it. A door binds in summer because the wood has taken on moisture and swollen, and outdoor wood in this area runs about 11.1 percent moisture content in April against 12.6 percent in September. Most of that comes in through unsealed top and bottom edges, which builders routinely leave bare. Sealing all six faces and rebuilding the finish slows the swing considerably. If the door is also out of square or the hinges have dropped, that gets adjusted on the same visit.

Do I need Windover Heights Board of Review approval to refinish my door?

Ask the Town of Vienna, because the Board reviews exterior alterations within the district. Refinishing is not a replacement: the door, its panel layout, its hardware and its opening all stay exactly as they are, which is normally the least contentious kind of work in a historic district. We can supply a written scope describing the materials and the finish for you to submit. Do not take our word for the approval, though. Confirm it with the Town before we book the date.

Can you refinish the inside face of the door as well?

Yes. The interior face is a different job from the exterior. No UV to speak of, but scuffs, dog scratches and often a completely different original finish underneath. Plenty of Vienna homeowners have us do the outside because it has failed and the inside because it no longer matches. It adds time rather than difficulty, and it is quoted separately from the exterior side so you can decide either way on the day.

How much does door refinishing cost in Vienna?

Single entry doors run $550 to $1,400, double and French pairs $950 to $2,200, and wood garage doors $1,200 to $3,200. Where a specific Vienna door lands depends on size, wood species, panel count and whether we are stripping one failed coat or five. A 1960s painted rambler door in Vienna Woods and an eight-foot mahogany double on a new build are not the same job. We look at the door and give you a firm price before anything starts.
