The bottom of my hundred-year-old door has gone soft. Is it finished?
Not necessarily. Soft bottom rails are the single most common problem on doors this age, because the end grain sits where water pools and almost nobody ever sealed it. Localized rot in a rail can often be cut back to sound timber and pieced in with matching stock, then finished so the repair disappears. Rot that has run up into the panels or through a tenon is a different story. We look at it, tell you which one you have, and price honestly either way.
Do I need approval to refinish an exterior door in Glen Echo?

Designated properties go through a Historic Area Work Permit for exterior alterations, and only they can tell you where your house falls. Can you match the color of a finish that is a hundred years old?

We test on the hinge stile or the door bottom, then let you look at it in daylight, outdoors, before we commit to the whole slab. Interior light lies about color. If there is an untouched area under a hinge plate or a kick plate, that is our best reference and we use it.
Do you refinish porch woodwork and screen doors too?
Yes, and on a house from the 1890s or 1900s it is often the right call. The wraparound porches on these streets have turned posts, rails and brackets that weather on the same schedule as the front door, and an old wooden screen or storm door usually sits in worse shape than the door behind it.
