We keep it. On a nineteenth-century Aldie door the lockset, the hinges, the escutcheons and the knocker are often the most original things left, and they should go back on the same screws in the same holes. Everything is removed, bagged and labeled before stripping so nothing gets stripper on it and nothing goes missing. If you want the brass cleaned rather than left with its patina, tell us, because that is a decision you should make, not us.
