My door has decades of paint on it. Can you take it back to stain?
Often, but not always, and we will look before we promise. Layered paint comes off by hand with scrapers and stripper, and what is underneath decides the answer. If the slab is a good hardwood with even grain, staining it is a real option. If it is a softwood door that was always meant to be painted, or the grain is stained black from old fixings, a quality paint finish will look far better than a forced stain. We tell you which you have.
Do you paint doors as well as stain them?
Yes. Plenty of Haymarket doors, particularly in the old town, were painted from new and should stay painted. The prep is the same discipline: strip, repair, sand, prime, then finish coats laid off properly so the panels and moldings stay crisp instead of clogging up. Paint is also the honest answer where a slab has patched repairs that would show through a clear finish. The price band is the same as a stained door.
I have a storm door in front of the entry. Does that change anything?
It changes a lot, and usually not for the better. A storm door traps heat against the slab on a sunny elevation, which can push temperatures high enough to blister a finish that would otherwise be fine.
