In Old Town the doors are the real article: heavy single leaves with four or five raised panels, some with a transom light above and original mortise locks still turning, hung on Queen Anne and Foursquare houses that predate the Second World War by decades. Many have been painted fifteen or twenty times. Out in Wellington, Point of Woods, Cloverhill and Sumner Lake the doors are whatever a 1980s or 1990s builder installed: six-panel oak or fiberglass, sidelights on the larger models, a fanlight over the door at the top of the range. The century-old door is nearly always worth saving. The 1985 door is worth saving when the material is sound, and we say so plainly when it is not.

Usually. A panel that has split along the grain but is still captured in its grooves can be cleaned out, glued and filled, or have a sliver of matching wood let in, then sanded flush and finished over. What we cannot make invisible is a split that a previous owner already filled with caulk or auto body filler, because that has to come out first and the repair underneath is more work.
